About

Jack is an Independent Mental Capacity Assessor, Independent Visitor (deputyships) and Court of Protection Visitor (Appointed by the Lord Chancellor under the rules set by the Commissioner for Public Appointments). Jack has been involved in the application of the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and its Code of Practice in relation to capacity assessments since 2010 in the legal sector and for the Office of the Public Guardian and Court of Protection.

Jack graduated with a specialist law degree (LLB Hons Social and Public – first class honours degree) in 2010, the onus being on public law and family law and heavily focused on the law of consent, mental capacity and private client matters. After University, Jack went into legal practice where he worked in various areas of family law and wills and probate, including for clients with mental capacity issues.

Between 2013 and 2016 Jack worked for the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) initially as a Permanent Court of Protection Visitor and latterly as the senior executive with responsibility for all Court of Protection Visitors and the Court of Protection’s panel of deputies. Jack has in-depth knowledge of the OPG’s approach to assurance visits for both solicitors and public authorities and continues to be involved in law firm compliance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 including how fiduciary duties for deputies and attorneys impact on the SRA codes for solicitors.

Between 2016 and 2020 Jack worked for the Law Society of England & Wales where his work included policy matters relating to reforms in solicitor regulation and developments in private client matters (including mental capacity law and the law of succession).

In 2020, Jack returned to Court of Protection work as a Court of Protection Visitor under a public appointment, where he conducts capacity assessments in OPG investigations, supports lay persons in their deputyships and conducts compliance visits (assurance visits) to law firms and public authorities.

Jack was invited to become a member of the Association of Independent Visitors (AIVUK) in 2022.
